CX FAQ’s

Q: What is Cyclocross?

A: Cyclocross is the fastest growing segment of bicycle racing in the US. It is a cycling activity that started in Europe as a way for road cyclists to stay in shape during the off-season. The courses generally offer a mix of terrain including grass, pavement, hills, dirt, and barricade portions to force riders into a partial run each lap. The race is extremely viewer friendly, as competitors ride around a closed circuit exclusively on a safe, self-contained course. Although Cyclocross is a hard event, it is a great way to get a massive amount of bike racing experience in a short period of time.

Q: You can Cyclocross in Florida?

A: Absolutely! Florida has race venues all over the state featuring various terrain and styles, so come on out and join in the fun.

Q: Do I need a license to race?

A: Yes. If your category is category 4 (there are no category 5′s in CX) and you do NOT carry an annual USAC, you need a one day license (available at the race site for $10). Masters and Juniors are not categorized and may race on one day licenses. If your category is above Cat 4 (men and women) you must purchase an annual USAC Road/CX license. Annual licenses will also be on sale for $60. Licenses purchases after December 1 are also good for the next racing year. All USAC races required approved helmets.

Q: What category should I race?

A: If you are a new racer, then your CX category will start as a 4. See the USAC rule book for upgrade guidelines. If you have a current and valid USAC Road license then you were also issued a CX category. Since road categories are often not indicative of CX ability (either way) if you feel that your USAC CX category is not your appropriate CX category, you may request a category change online at usacycling.org.

Q: Do I have to start in Category 4 and move up in categories?

A: Unless you are a Cat 1,2 or 3 on the road (or the equivalent in mountain biking) you need to start off a Cat 4 in CX. The only exceptions to this rule is if you would like to enter age-graded races for Masters (35+, 45+) ,or Juniors (<14, <18).

Q: I am 36 years old beginner, which race should I enter?

A: You can enter either the 35+ race, or your category 4 race. It should be noted that many people in the 35+ category are also among the fastest in the south east, so the 4 race may be more appropriate.

Q: What is a typical race like?

A: Races last 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the category. There are races for each level of rider from first-timer to old pro. Racers should expect to ride fast, work hard, and, most importantly, have a lot of fun. It is well known that the best part of a cyclocross event is the party on the sidelines. Bring your friends, family and your dog and make a day of it. Many people enjoy cross because you can see most of the course from one location. What’s better than hanging out and making a day of watching your friends and teammates working hard on and off the bicycle?
